Yerba Mate is a traditional South American drink which is enjoyed by millions around the globe.
It is a caffeine producing plant and has similar levels of caffeine as coffee, tea and cacao. It was discovered by the indigenous people of the forests in countries such as Paraguay and Brazil. Much later Argentinian cowboys used to drink it for energy during long harvests.
The flavour is earthy, bitter sweet and vegetal.
It is often described as a beverage with the smooth flavour of tea, the energy kick of coffee and the feel good factor of chocolate. This could be because the plant contains caffeine, theophylline and theobromine, the stimulants also found in coffee, tea and chocolate.
3g of organic yerba mate loose tea leaf will make 1 cup of tea. 3g tea is approximately 2 teaspoons.
